Books, Conventions and Things Happening in the Windswept World of Bookbiz

There’s plenty to report. The best and latest news is that Torsten Low Publishing will be publishing my next book. It’s set once again in Cambridge, at Royston College where the magically talented can study Arcane Sciences and Metaphysics. The heroine is called Felicity. The working title is “The Blood of Others”. It is a sequel to “Serpent of Malice”, but tells its own independent story.

The book gets a little gory. Don’t worry, I’m do not tend to write splatter novels, but there are a few characters in the plot… some dead… some a trifle undead…

The wonderful Jela has proofread the manuscript and spotted a few errors, which I missed and have been able to correct, so that the publisher and the publisher’s editor, I hope, won’t have much more work to do. The book is due to be published in time for the Leipzig Book Fair 2027, and the publisher has already hinted that they’ll present it there.

I had to give the FeenCon a miss this year because I’d torn my meniscus and couldn’t walk properly. But I did manage to make it to the FOLLOW Fest, where I gave a reading and caught up with old friends. That was lovely. At the festival, I realised just how much warmer it’s got. My fantasy costume wardrobe only contained long-sleeved medieval outfits. In this hot weather, you have to rethink your costuming. I always get really annoyed when some idiot comes out with the line, “It has always been hot in the summer”.

Yes, it used to be warm in summer back then too. Many years ago, when I was at school, lessons were cancelled when the temperature rose above 25° centigrade. When it reached 30°, the tabloid press would sprout headlines that it was as hot as in Italy (!) – and wasn’t that great? 40° was something that happened in distant deserts that were none of our business unless you rode through them on a horse with no name.

I’ve got a few choice words to say about those idiots who’d rather die of heatstroke than admit that they are wrong. But I’ll refrain from doing so.

Of course, I also went to Metropol EuroCon in Berlin. My dear friend Volkmar gave me a lift in his car – it is not close to where I live. The book table was a bit of a pain, as was my meniscus. But even if I did not sell a great deal of books, I met many interesting people, took part in two panels myself and even managed to sit in on one more.

I also attended RatCon in Langen . Role-playing conventions are always a bit of a gamble. On the one hand, people would rather play than buy books; on the other, they’d rather buy rulebooks than novels. Still, it was nice. I was sitting right next to Bernhard Hennen and his wife, so I was in excellent company..
